Next Pick December 2 2024

7:00pm Maldon Neighbourhood House, 1 Church St. Maldon

What's New...

No pick in November as it's party time

8th October - Well it was just me. Thanks to those who gave their apologies.

Been a busy month being away. Had several gigs too. Hopefully get back on track over the next few weeks...

6th August - Cold weather and lurgies kept all but the foolhardy away from this get together. But three of us braved the elements to have a go at some tunes. Well done Barry, John and me!

2 July - Five intrepid pickers, Ross, Barry, Johnathan, John and myself braved the cold to run through a swag of oldies plus our tune of the month - Forked Deer. We stayed a bit late to run through a gypsy jazz tune called 'Bossa Dorado' which was a bit of fun.

Forked Deer - I once learned a version of this tune from Tim May at Jam Camp in Texas but totally forgot it straight away. I recently found a very bad recording that I made after the workshop of him slowing it down for me. I have tried to improve the audio a bit in this video which you can download if you are interested in learning it. He has quite a cool take on the B part which I quite like. This version dosesn't use a capo which is also interesting as most players play it capoed 2.

Red Haired Boy - Check out this Tony Rice version for the backup chords in the B part

NEW Tabledit Page! I have added a page where you can download tabledit files for tunes that we have been playing. You will need the free Tabledit Player to play the tabs https://tabledit.com/tefview/index.shtml

4th June - another great session with Mark P, Johnathan, Ross and myself. We picked through some fine tunes including the appropriale Frosty Morning, Redhair, Salt Creek, Fisher's Hornpipe, Cattle, Scioty, Billy, Beaumont, Black Mountain and a couple more.

7th May - Six fine pickers - Ross, Sean, Finn, John, Barry and I. Great evening exploring some classics including our Tune of the Month- Cold and Frosty Morning. We even indulged in a little Bossa Dorado later in the evening.

9 April - Well that was a strange one. I missed most of it due to a cat attack! But I got there in the end. Played a few tunes - Big Scioty and some others - not sure now. Here's to the next one running more smoothly.

5 March 2024 - 5 Fabulous pickers enjoyed a couple of hours of fine tunes. Ross, Sean, Johnathan, Finn and myself ran through, Bill C, Red Haired Boy, Salt Creek, Temperance Reel, Blackberry Blossom, St Annes Reel, Beaumont Rag, Whiskey Before Breakfast and Rickets Hornpipe. We pondered on exactly what a Hornpipe was Johnathan sent me this link https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hornpipe which might clear things up (or confuse them even more). Here's a link to Ian Walsh's fabulous version - I couldn't find guitar tab!

6th Feb 2024 - An enthusiastic trio of Volksy, Finn and Mark turned up to have a pick. We ploughed through Beaumont, Billy, Salty, Blackberry, Whiskey and a few others. We also had a quick look at the Temperance Reel and Cold and Frosty Morning. A very relaxed but fun session. Keep on pickin'...

9th Jan 2024 - We had 6 enthusiastic pickers, Kevin, Bruce, Noel, all from Melbourne plus Mark, Finn and Jonathan. We worked through a lot of standards. Both Billy's Cheatham and Lowground, Salt Creek, Cattle, Big Scioty, Beaumont Rag and a few others. Nice pickin' guys!

5 Dec 2023 - Great to have Dave and Jonathan join us for this session. We covered 'Cattle', 'Billy', 'Paddy on the Beat', 'Salt Creek', 'Big Scioty' , 'Big Sandy River' and a few others. We even finger picked a version of 'Freight Train'.

Barry has put together a play list of YouTube videos here. If you want to contribute you can follow this link.

Dave and Barry have made tab and notation for 'Paddy on The Beat'.

31 Oct - Again a great session with most of our regulars plus Ross. We covered a few old favourites - Billy in the Lowground, Pig Ankle, Beaumont Rag and a few others.

3 Oct - We had a small but enthusiastic group (3 of us). We covered some old favourites - Billy in the LG, Salt Creek, Pig Ankle etc and some newer ones namely: Farewell Trion, Cattle in the Cane, and Big Sandy River.

I put an asterisk on the tunes we've been playing at our recent get togethers if you want to brush up on those.

Look forward to catching up soon.
